Our Roots

Near the turn of the 19th century, the Northern Pacific Railroad opened a depot in Yakima, Washington, giving the rest of the world a way to taste the fruits of Central Washington. More than 100 years ago, three men saw the unlimited potential of this fertile region offering rich soil, sunny days and easy irrigation – making it the perfect birthplace for a new ag industry.

Over 100 Years of Quality

Fred B. Plath incorporated Washington Fruit in 1916 to grow, pack and ship high quality tree fruit. Washington Fruit has marketed apples, pears and cherries under the Independent label for over a century. A partnership with Mt. Adams Fruit was formed in the 1940s. Mt. Adams grows, packs and ships premium apples, pears and cherries from the scenic Columbia River Gorge. The partnership has enabled Washington Fruit to provide customers with fresh fruit year-round.
